Buh-bye, perfection...

I had the naive idea that, after Baby came along, my life would easily go back into pre-baby order: my home would continue to be spotless and organized, I would have quiet time everyday, get in five good workouts every week, make time for my friends...all while being the perfect wife and mother.

Hahaha!

My life has recently turned into piles and stacks.  Piles of laundry to be sorted and washed.  Piles of dog poop in the back yard to be picked up.  Piles of purchases to be returned because I was too distracted while shopping to realize what I was buying.  Piles of toys.  Stacks of magazines to go through.  Stacks of unreturned voicemails and emails (Can these be in stacks?).  Stacks of dirty dishes in the sink.  Stacks of books that I intend to read when I just get a little time.

With so many responsibilities around the home, there is literally not enough time in the day for everything unless I fully stop sleeping (Baby is helping me out a little with this one ;) ).  Something has to give.  For Hubby and me, everything other than his work, our family, and our faith is on the chopping block.  The revolving piles and stacks of home will all eventually be dealt with, and new ones will inevitably be formed.

But that's ok.  I truly believe that no woman can do it all. If she is doing it all, something likely had to be sacrificed to do it.  I'm letting go of thinking I have to do everything...perfectly.  I know that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength (Phil. 4:13).  I can do everything.  I will do everything.  Just not perfectly, not all at once, and not before family time.  I won't sacrifice time or attention to my family in order to accomplish the "Martha" tasks at home (see this post for more on this).

Buh-bye, perfection!  Hello, happy family (and non-perfect house and social life)!

  1. Love this! I somehow thought that I would have all the time in the world to be the perfect housewife/mom. After all, I'm home and not working...YEAH RIGHT!

  2. Ha, who's perfect, even without kids. There's always something that needs to be done or some stack of laundry should have been gone for like forever but hey, as long as we know that we enjoyed life to the fullest and were happy along the way - who cares about perfection. Maybe we need to redefine perfection :D

  4. Good for you! Pefection is overrated anyway! It is true that if it seems a woman has it all, thre is something that has taken the backseat, you just may not see what it is. And you are doing the right thing about keeping baby, faith and husband on the important list. And let me add to try and add taking care of yourself to the important list as well. If you don't take care of you, who will take care of them?
BTW, I have stacks and piles and my youngest turns 18 this week. I can't use a baby as my reason, lol!
    Sayonara perfection!

  5. This is one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn as a mom. I really can not do it all. No matter how bad I wish I could. It is hard sometimes, and I lose focus, but for the most part I've just learned to let somethings slide (like ever having my clothes actually put away in the closet).

  6. Thank you for all of the support and encouragement! It feels empowering to let go of the little things...and to know that so many others understand and do the same! Perfection is waaaay overrated, and I'm beginning to understand that there is beauty in imperfection! :)

  8. GREAT post!
And yay, you discovered this before you got too far down the superwoman track... that is so good!

Always, something has to give. And what's great is that you and your hubby have put all but the most important things on the chopping block. Way to go :)

  9. Perfection can be boring anyway ;-) At least right now those stacks stay where you put them. Now my stacks get attacked by a curious toddler lol. You'll find a balance and learn to love a little insanity in life.

  10. Perfect post for me to read. I'm such a perfectionist, and it's going to be so hard for me to adjust to not having a clean, organized house and life after our baby is born. But you are right - no one is perfect, and it's OKAY!

  14. Oh, my, you should have seen my house after my baby was born. We demand so much of ourselves, but it's ok not to be perfect. Great post!
